ESO ESRB Rating Announced - Mature

Recommended Posts

The Elder Scrolls Online is officially a game intended for "Mature" audiences, as rated by the ESRB. The announcement was released January 22nd via the official Facebook page...

The ESRB advised us that it has given The Elder Scrolls Online a Mature rating. While we may disagree with the ESRB’s determination, we do not plan to challenge the rating, and we are unwilling to change the game’s content to achieve a different rating. The game we have created is the one we want our fans to be able to play.As a result of the ESRB rating, we are in the process of promptly updating everything with the required rating and age gates, including game trailers, web sites, and ads. Thanks for your understanding. We can’t wait to welcome players into The Elder Scrolls Online soon.

ZeniMax clearly expected and intended for the game to achieve a "Teen" rating for a broader potential audience. However, those hoping for a more mature overall theme and the potential for gorier graphical details will likely be pleased with the ESRB's determination.Click here to view the article

Hopefully this will stop all the kids who have slept with my mother from playing and telling me about the experience.

Didn't seem to help CoD.

The irritating thing here, in my opinion, is that since they were clearly aiming for teen they cut down on a lot of the "realities" of mature things, like combat. Teen isn't really supposed to have any blood or gore, which I think is one of the many immersive aspects of mature games (even though it's never horrifically accurate). They're certainly not going to add the M things back in that they cut for a T rating at this point in development.

I kind of get a kick out of the ESRB ratings. The "Mature" rating only stops the kids from playing that are - likely - mature enough to handle it, i.e. the kids who have good parents who pay attention to what they're doing.

Before anyone freaks out on me about how they're a good parent even though they let their kids play M games, I'll add this caveat: this is obviously not always the case. It's not a matter of drawing a line in the sand between ratings; it's a matter of knowing what your kids are doing in these games, and being able to teach them about what they're seeing because you ARE paying attention to what's in them.

tl;dr all of the stereotypical CoD kiddies who should be the ones getting filtered by M ratings never will be.

oh wow, +1 Zenimax.

Didnt expect that. Normally they publisher pushes the games to a teen rating for more PROFIT!

Another good point for the argument ESO isnt just a moneycow. I like.

It won't discourage many of the lovers of your mother blake. But the mature rating + P2P will keep some younger players away bc they parents won't pay for this. I dunno how it's knowadays but back in my time i couldn't affort a mmo with my pocketmoney, or i couldn't buy anything else.

But at all a huge advantage for the "community" and a less money for Zenimax. We'll see if its good or bad in the future ;)

To me it looks more or less like they gave up on it because they have their hands full of other things, if they had more time they probably would have gone for Teen rating.

it all makes no real difference to me, although I do like the idea of it being a mature experience, hopefully without the young and dumb leaving the mic on while they show the world their impressive vocabulary.. in truth though that is always going to be a problem, David is entirely right in saying the kids who can cope probably wont be playing while the ones that cant will become a pita in the alliance/world/group channels until booted..

aside from all that and more importantly is the worrying reports from reviewers saying the game will fail, the PTP being to high and outdated (myself I think its the best way to go and fair if they produce the quality weve come to expect from the franchise) and all the negative publicity, it cant be helping Zenimax or Bethesda's projected sales and with a rumoured $200m investment that has to have some people sweating..

personally I hope and expect it to smash it out the park regardless of the naysayers and esrb ratings

Blake.. is your mum my ex wife?
