Unlike Oblivion, you don't suffer any sort of penalty for wearing heavy armor when maging. One of my best characters was a Breton Heavy Armored Mage. Shit was cash. The armor cap is about 580, or 80% physical damage resistance, and the best light armor can easily reach that, without the extra weight and noise.
