I guess it is an RPG of sorts, but not in the traditional sense.
Usually I pair RPG's with turn based fights, a traditional stat system, and random encounters. While Skyrim does feature a lot of RPG elements, I wouldn't classify it as such.
RPG Action/Adventure maybe?

Hmm, would that not be more like an MMORPG? I would consider both to be an RPG.

RPG's are just "games in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting." It's probably one of the broadest genres out there. How is Skyrim not a role playing game? I think the argument you guys are having comes down to what most people think of when they say "RPG" - Western RPG's like Fallout, Skyrim, etc. compared to the older "Japanese" (JRPG) RPG's like Final Fantasy.

MMO = Massively Multiplayer Online. What?
Blexun's definition is based on JRPGs.

Alright, I just read stat system and thought of RuneScape.

While we're on the subject of different types of RPGs, would you guys consider the Souls series Western or Japanese RPGs? They were made in Japan, but their RPG mechanics feel very Western.

It's an RPG, because you get to make the choices that have effects in the rest of the game.

It's definitely not an RPG. Now, you might wonder why I say that, but I have many really good reasons as to why this is. I'm surprised by how many of you failed to recognize this. Really, it's not an RPG! Here are my reasons;

In that sense is it not? Skyrim has to be a role-playing game. You play the role of the dragonborn - You do whatever the fuck you want and your actions affect how the game plays for you. Granted, it's not a pure full 100% RPG, perheps more of an action-adventure game. But definitely to some effect, it is an RPG.

I was going to have the reason as: "Skyrim is an RPG" but then I though this^^ would be much more fun.In that sense is it not? Skyrim has to be a role-playing game.
