Backgrounds are a fixed width, but the site isn't (it fills up a percentage of your screen). I have a very wide screen, so I just see white on the edges. Minimizing and adjusting your browser size will change what you see.

That kind of ruins it for me. I like thinking everybody can see my image. now I know only a select few will see it in its entirely

Yeah, but they are standardized so that most people will be able to see the main images.
