July Game Sales Lowest Since 2006

David
  • July 2012 doesn't appear to have been too kind to the gaming industry. Figures published by the NDP group show dramatic slides in several key areas.

A report by the consumer market research NDP group noted that the month of July 2012 featured the lowest amount of game sales since October 2006. The $548.4 million in sales represented a 20% slide from July 2011.

Overall Dollar Sales

Total consumer spend (rentals, used sales, digital estimates included): $1.1 billion

  • Total retail sales: $548.4 million (-20%)
  • Non-PC hardware: $150.7 million (-32%)
  • Non-PC software: $260.7 million (-23%)
  • Total software: $278.2 million (-23%)
  • Accessories: $136.9 million (+8%)

Drops in profits range from 1/5 in total retail sales to nearly 1/3 in non-PC hardware.

NCAA Football 13 led the pack of most-sold video games during July, likely due to the limited number of new releases (it was the only new release even featured in the top 10).

I guess July is usually a big month in gaming sales?

To the contrary; few big game releases are released, so the sales are actually low in the Summer. I buy older games anyway to save money, so I still have games to play. Many gamers get bored in the Summer, though.

Yeah, virtually no games ever come out in the summer besides the normal B-titles like NCAA Football which has a reason to (upcoming football season). I personally buy most of my games in the summer, though, since there are usually great deals.
