I'm not sure what your specific problem starting the quest is, so I apologize if what I'm about to say doesn't help. You can add more details by replying to this topic.Many people have an issue with this quest when the cave has already been cleared. This is fixed by waiting until the NPC's respawn (I believe it's 30 days of in-game time)There's also a conflict with the Helm of Winterhold quest. If you've begun that quest and then attempt the companions quest, it may not start.
