How to make console changes permanent?

I am trying to change my non-follower spouse to essential. This would also possibly apply to changing their clothing as well. When I try either, it undoes itself as soon as I reload. How can I make these changes permanent? This is on PC, if that wasn't obvious by my use of console commands.

setessential RefID 1

Replace the "RefID" above with that which corresponds to the character you're trying to make essential.

To save clothes, since you're on the PC version, I'd try to just use mods for the most flexibility. You could try Amazing Follower Tweaks or Simple Outfit System, neither of which I've used, but they seem to be what you're looking for.
