Placing items on shelfs

So you know how when you walk into a room and you see a bookshelf with random crap on it. Well, I was wondering because I have these bookshelfs in my house and I was just wondering if it was possible to put things like ingredients or things other then books on shelfs within my house. If it is possible can you please tell me. I have xbox 360 by the way.

Although you cannot place other objects on them directly you can drop it on the floor put ur curser over it and hold A & move it up there.
