what happens to lydia if I let her go?

Hi all, im new to skyrim (ps3) and I just have a question. I want to try and marry erik the slayer but have not hired him yet since he says I will have to let lydia go. So I was just wondering what happens to lydia if I let her go and is it possible to get her back if I marry erik or let him go?

She just stops following you and returns to Breezehome. You can get her to follow you again by talking to her there, so no worries.

Thanks! And what happens if I killed Maramal? That means I cant get married right?

Maramal is an essential NPC, so you can't kill him. But yes, he is required for the marriage quest (the Bonds of Matrimony).
